11/11/11 11:11

Interesting word: ELEVEN.

What does it mean to you?

Well, I have had a curiosity as to what the world will do with this gregorian calendar oddity.

It’s amazing how the world thinks… and wastes time (our most valuable resource).

Humans can make stuff up out of nothing and make it significant by their belief systems (eg religion) and others (maybe like me) seek substantive or scientific explanation.

Others just make it FUN!

My curiosity got the better of me. Here’s a sample of what I found…

Blink and you’ll miss it!

Friday sees once-in-a-lifetime moment as time and date read 11.11.11 11.11.11

Only occurs on one day every 100 years.

There are some on the outer fringes of the internet who say it heralds the end of the world; but for others, it looks like the perfect day for a wedding

At 11.11.11 on 11.11.11, the time and date will be a perfect same-numbered palindrome, reading the same backwards as forwards, an event which can only happen on one day every 100 years.

And even the most hardened sceptic will surely pause for a moment to reflect on the unique occurrence, which will not come around again in the lifetime of most of us.

Among other things, 11.11.11 will be:

  • Armistice Day, celebrated around the world.
  • A day of spiritual significance for those who believe the number 11 has a mystical power.
  • A very special day to get married or have a birthday (especially if it’s your 11th).
  • Perhaps even the end of the world, according to some ‘prophecy’ web forums.

The reason the date is so unusual is that 11.11.11 is the only double-figure palindromic date, since there is no 22nd month.

And the last time it happened, on November 11 1911, an almost supernatural event saw temperatures drop by more than 60F in a single day.

twintowersApophenia

Apophenia (see Wikipedia) is the experience of seeing meaningful patterns or connections in random or meaningless data.

APOPHENIA: THE NATURAL HUMAN URGE TO FIND PATTERNS

The reason we ascribe significance to 11.11.11 is apophenia – the urge to find patterns in seemingly random data.

It is this that explains why we see clouds forming certain shapes, and why we often hear of people finding ‘faces’ in things like potato crisps.

Apophenia is also important in the psychology of gamblers. It can either encourage those on a winning streak to believe that it will continue, or convince losing gamblers that their luck must inevitably change.

While it can be a symptom of mental illness if taken to an extreme – as depicted in the film A Beautiful Mind – apophenia is instinctive to all humans as a way of drawing conclusions about the world.

This phenomenon helps us, for example, to recognise abstract drawings as representing human figures, and to remember phone numbers which seem to follow a pattern.

Conspiracy Theories

Conspiracy theorists are famously prone to identify a (perhaps coincidental) pattern, and conclude that it must have great significance, although in real life important, life-changing, and even catastrophic things can occur simply out of random chance.

11-11-11: the Movie

Friday 11/11/11 sees the release of apocalyptic film 11-11-11, which predicts the opening of a Hellmouth.

The film by Darren Bousman, director of several entries in the Saw franchise, features a man whose family dies in a car crash at 11.11am, and who then begins to be haunted by the number 11.

It plays on beliefs long held by some spiritualists, who say that the number has a special significance and claim that many people have a mystical attraction to the time 11.11.

23 Enigma (similar)

The 23 enigma refers to the belief that most incidents and events are directly connected to the number 23, some modification of the number 23, or a number related to the number 23.

There was even a movie (The Number 23) about it with Jim Carrey.

11 Eleven Project

(11/rec) Capturing Humanity

Do you see the number 11 everywhere? Well, you’re not the only one. Millions of people have a special connection to the number 11 and now they’re able to unite. If you see 11 or 11:11 why not “press record” and share it with the world. The main event takes place on 11/11/11 so stay up to date with everything on Facebook. There’s even an iPhone App to participate.

Whether or not you choose to accept the information in this article, at least understand this. Your life is regulated and controlled by mathematics. Both in a physical world as well as spiritual. There are 7 days in a week, 12 months to a year, 365 days to a year, 60 minutes in a hour and 24 hours to a day. Your work schedule is regulated by the numbers. The cosmos is even controlled by the numbers. God gave us 10 commandants. One of those commandments is to observe the 7th day of rest. There are many references to Gods numerology in the bible as well as Satan’s. Even the mark of the beast will be 666.

Drawing from some of the most pivotal points in his life, Steve Jobs, chief executive officer and co-founder of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, urged graduates to pursue their dreams and see the opportunities in life’s setbacks — including death itself — at the university’s 114th Commencement on June 12, 2005.

250px-Steve_Jobs_HeadshotThe recent passing of Steve Jobs got me wondering what the rest of us mere mortals could learn from such a visionary businessman and creative genius.

Carmine Gallo’s book The innovation secrets of Steve Jobs, distils Jobs’ philosophy down to seven principles. After thinking about how I can apply those ideas to a new venture a friend and I are planning, here’s what I came up with.

1. Do what you love: Think differently about your career

After a recent period of stress, I’m keen for the next phase of my business-life to be all about flow, fun and good vibes. As one of my mentors recently reminded me, “When you’re self-employed there is absolutely no reason to do anything you don’t want to do.” Amen to that.

2. Put a dent in the universe: Think differently about your vision

Steve Jobs was a universe-changer on a grand scale. Can a couple of humble small business owners from Sydney put a dent in the universe too? We’re going to give it a red hot go.

3. Kick-start your brain: Think differently about how you think

I’m so passionate and excited about the new business that I’ve noticed a huge burst in creative energy and I’m now actively looking out for ways to do things differently, just to see what unfolds. Watch this space.

4. Sell dreams, not products: Think differently about your customers

As a marketer and copywriter, I’ve long been familiar with the principle of selling in a way that solves a problem or relieves a pain.

5. Say ‘No’ to 1000 things: Think differently about design

Design applies to more than just the look and feel of a product or page. I’m applying this principle to our marketing plan to ensure we don’t try to be all things to all people with our new products.

6. Create insanely great experiences: Think differently about your brand experience

How awesome would it be for someone to describe their experience of our brand as ‘insanely great’? So far I’ve only got the tiniest inkling about how we’re going to achieve this, but I love the idea, and am going to try to weave it into everything we do.

7. Master the message: Think differently about your story

The way we tell the stories of our products, and the way people respond to those stories is what sets one business apart from another. Hopefully ours will be a page-turner!

What would all the world’s experts and authorities say today if the Titanic were sinking but nobody was willing to admit it?

The U.S. economy, after all, is sinking and taking on an unprecedented volume of water (i.e. debt), yet virtually no one is willing to admit the obvious fact that this ship is sinking.

And much like with the Titanic, most “experts” continue to claim the U.S. economy is unsinkable, despite the obvious evidence that we might want to start heading for the life rafts.

So in the spirit of comedy — which is, after all, what we are witnessing in Washington these days — imagine The Titanic hitting an iceberg in 2011, followed by a string of experts all trying to spin the story their own way. Here’s what they might say:

The White House Press Secretary: The iceberg was placed in the Atlantic ocean by Osama Bin Laden.

The Chemist: That’s not an iceberg. It’s merely solid-state di-hydrogen monoxide.

Al Gore:That iceberg wouldn’t have even been there if the polar caps weren’t melting.

The Congressman:Quick, let’s pass a new law that says ships shall not sink.

President Obama: The Titanic isn’t sinking. It’s merely engaged in “aquatic action.”

Former President Bush: Icebergs are weapons of mass destruction planted in the ocean byterrorists. We must avenge the iceberg terrorists!

The Pentagon: We will equalize the hole in one side of the ship by blowing a matching hole in the other side.

The TSA Inspector: You’re not allowed onto a lifeboat until we check your anus for explosives.

The Cancer Doctor: We can’t fix the hole in the ship, but through the miracle of chemotherapy, we can make you suffer so much that you won’t care.

The Wall Street Investment Banker: Don’t worry, the Fed will bail out all thewaterwe’re taking on. The Titanic is too big to fail.

The Teenage Girl: Can I still text on my iPhone under water?

Congressman Weiner: Yes you can, and by the way, here’s a very special “going away” message for you to remember me by.

Average Joe: Is the ship’s buffet still open?

The FDA: We believe the ship is sinking because of an e.coli infection that spread from the galley.

The CDC: Everybody should get vaccinated before the ship sinks, just in case there’s a shark-flu virus in the water.

The New Ager: There is no hole in the ship unless you believe there is a hole in the ship.

The Academic: I have published a paper that proves this ship is unsinkable. Would anyone like to read it? Please?

The Catholic priest:I think we should save all the children first. Which lifeboat are they on again?

The Journalist: The Titanic has a hole in its side, but official sources tell us it’s only “aquatic action” and there’s no cause for alarm. And we believe them.

The Federal Reserve: We have decided to dump more water onto the ship in the hope of making it float.

The Federal Government: Hey, these deck chairs look pretty nice. Let’s rearrange them!

The Doctor: We need to order a couple dozen CT scans of the ship’s null and bill them to Medicare before we have any idea at all what to do.

The Denialist: Stop talking about negative things. Stay focused on the positive and you won’t need a life vest.

The Realist: This ship is going down, folks. You might want to think about taking action to keep yourself alive.

The Gullible Masses: Don’t worry, this ship is unsinkable.

Even if it did sink, there are plenty of lifeboats.

Even if there aren’t enough lifeboats, we all have life jackets.

Even if we don’t have enough life jackets, the government will come save us

This is by far the best explanation of the Muslim terrorist situation I have ever read.

His references to past history are accurate and clear.

Not long, easy to understand, and well worth the read.

The  author of this email is said to be Dr. Emanuel Tanay, a well-known and well-respected psychiatrist.

A German’s View on  Islam

A man, whose family was German aristocracy  prior to World War II, owned a number of large industries  and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism. ‘Very few people were true Nazis,’ he said, ‘but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many  more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of the world had come. My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies destroyed my factories.’

We are told again and again by ‘experts’ and ‘talking heads’ that Islam is the religion of peace and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace. Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to  make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the  spectre of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam.

The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history. It is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars  worldwide. It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter  Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire continent in an Islamic  wave. It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honour-kill. It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque. It is the fanatics who zealously spread the  stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals. It is the fanatics who teach their young to kill and to become suicide bombers.

The hard, quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the ’silent majority,’ is cowed and extraneous.

Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists  were responsible for the murder of about 20 million  people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. China’s  huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.

The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet.

And who can forget Rwanda, which collapsed into butchery? Could it not be said that the majority of  Rwandans were ‘peace loving’? History lessons are often incredibly simple and  blunt, yet for all our powers of reason, we often miss the  most basic and uncomplicated of points:

Peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant  by their silence. Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don’t speak up, because like my friend from Germany, they will awaken one day and find that the fanatics own them, and the end of their world will have begun.

Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians,  Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have – yes that includes us Americans as well – who suffered and died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it  was too late. As for us who watch it all unfold, we must  pay attention to the only group that counts–the fanatics  who threaten our way of life or our lives.

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered:

“Man… Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.

Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.

And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present;

the result being that he does not live in the present or the future;

he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”
