Dr. Loren Cordain and a few MD colleagues have recently published a paper (PDF) called “Organic Fitness: Physical Activity Consistent with Our Hunter-Gatherer Heritage.” It makes for a great companion piece to Primal Blueprint Fitness, and it encapsulates quite nicely the breadth of research into the physical activities of our hunter-gatherer ancestors. Read the whole thing. There’s probably nothing really new to you guys already well-versed in this stuff, but it’s good having it all in one space, and it’s good having it from more sources (not just me). If someone ever asks you why you go barefoot, avoid weight machines, squat below parallel (don’t you know it’s bad for your knees!?!), go on hikes for fun without sunscreen, and hate treadmills, you can send along a nice, neat package including the PBF eBook and the Cordain paper. This isn’t a “nyah, nyah, proven right again!” type thing (well, kinda). This is a “buttressing the incoming unavoidable inexorable impossible-to-ignore flood of evidence in favor of listening to evolution in matters of health and fitness” type thing. The times they are a changin’, eh?
Anyway, let’s get to the meaty bits of the paper – to what they call the “fundamental elements of ‘organic exercise,’ which may serve as a template from which to design a fitness strategy for adults living in today’s modern industrialized culture.” I’ve bolded and italicized their words (from a section of which the title of this article is derived) and followed up with my commentary:
1. A large amount background daily, light-to-moderate activity such as walking was required. Although the distances covered would have varied widely according to hunting and foraging routines, cultures, weather, seasons, ages, etc., most estimates indicate that the average daily distances covered were in the range of 6 to 16 km.
Or in other words, Move Frequently at a Slow Pace. Note that “6 to 16 km” per day is a fairly big range, and it’s the ideal – if you’re trying to perfectly emulate hunter-gatherer activity. This is neither necessarily optimum nor possible for most people. Now, If I could, I’d go on a two-hour leisurely paced hike through nature every single day, but I can’t, and so I don’t. I also don’t fret about it. If you get three to five hours (or more) of slow moving walking or hiking each week, you’re doing things right.
2. Hard days were typically followed by an easier day, but every day a variety of physical activities had to be accomplished just to provide for the basic human needs. The hunter-gatherers’ daily energy expenditures for physical activity typically were at least 800 to 1200 kcal or about 3 to 5 times that of modern sedentary individuals.
Vary your workouts and get plenty of rest, but stay active every day. Be a generalist, unless profession or dearly held extracurricular activities require specialization. That is, if you’re a high-level athlete or just an extremely passionate one, focus on your sport. Exercise should breed pleasure, after all. Hunter-gatherers were generalists by necessity; they had to be all-around physically capable, so it’s probably an optimal path – health-wise – for us, their descendants, but not if it negatively affects your enjoyment of life.
3. Individuals walked or ran on natural surfaces, such as grass and dirt, and often on uneven ground; our ancient ancestors almost never walked or ran on solid flat rock. The combination of softer natural walking/running surfaces and less biomechanically restrictive shoes is a more evolutionarily congruent strategy to reduce impact loading of the joints.
I’m in agreement with this – ditch the shoes altogether or opt for alternatives that promote natural locomotion – but “natural surfaces” are probably less important for healthy moving in the grand scheme of things. What’s important is how we land and use our joints and muscles to absorb the impact. If you’re walking or running in species appropriate footwear that promote a healthy footfall, you will be more likely to handle the impact of that footfall whether you’re on concrete, a hardwood floor, or a dirt path. I will say that walking or running on uneven ground strewn both with large obstacles that you have to avoid or climb over (rocks, sticks, branches) and with small objects that you perceive underfoot and must subconsciously react to (pebbles, gravel, sharp stickers) is ideal, but if you live in a big city without regular access to the outdoors, what are you gonna do? Nothing? Pick the appropriate footwear (or lack thereof) and you’ll be most of the way there.
4. Life in the wild often called for intermittent bursts of moderate-to-high level intensity exercise with intervening periods of rest and recovery. High-intensity interval training sessions should be performed once or twice per week.
As I often say, make your long, easy workouts longer and easier, and make your short, intense workouts even shorter and more intense. Intensity is key for the best results in fitness, but you’ve gotta rest. Apply a stressful stimulus, allow your body to respond and adapt to that stimulus. It’s extremely simple and intuitive, yet so many get it so wrong. Add sprinting to your weekly routine if you haven’t already. The PBF protocol calls for one dedicated sprint day each week, with WOWs rounding out the weekly HIIT.
5. Cross-training is important and should include exercises focusing on strength (resistive), endurance (aerobic), and flexibility (stretching). Rotation among multiple different forms of exercise develops resilience and multifaceted fitness and reduces the likelihood of overuse injury, boredom, and emotional burnout.
Again, the generalist approach. Competency across a broad range of movement patterns, activity types, and energy pathways. Joints should move freely and smoothly, lean mass should be visible and capable, and you shouldn’t get winded ascending a flight of stairs or going for a walk. These things – joint mobility and flexibility, basic physical strength, and adequate aerobic endurance – are valuable and useful to all people, everywhere, regardless of interest in formal exercise or sport.
6. Regular sessions of weight training and other strength-building exercises are essential for optimizing health and fitness. These need to be performed at least 2 or 3 times per week, for at least 20 to 30 minutes per session.
Strength training is the foundation. It helps you build and maintain a powerful, stable base of operations (your body) from which to conduct daily business. I would add that these weight training sessions must be composed of compound, full-body movements, rather than isolation exercises, because, well, compound multijoint movements are simply how we move around in the world. If you’re an advanced trainee with a strong foundation built by years of compound exercises, go ahead and hit the curls and tricep kickbacks if you like, but if you’re trying to establish or enhance your actual strength, stick with compound movements. Bodyweight is sufficient for just about everyone, but barbells, kettlebells, and other weighted implements are awesome tools, too. The PBF protocol calls for 2 LHT (Lift Heavy Things) days each week.
7. In general, hunter-gatherers were lean, and probably almost never obese, which reduced trauma to their joints.
Yep. (Have you ever seen Grok?) Furthermore, the obese are usually inactive, and activity – especially weight-bearing activity – increases the strength and thickness of connective tissue. So it’s a double whammy. Obesity increases wear and tear on joints that are already weakened by inactivity.
8. Virtually all of the exercise was done outdoors in the natural world. Outdoor activities help maintain ultraviolet-stimulated vitamin D synthesis, improve mood, and facilitate adherence to a regular exercise program.
This is a huge aspect of fitness (and health) that goes relatively unheeded. While you can still get an extremely effective workout in a cloistered gym, outdoor workouts provide added benefits. This isn’t rocket science. I think most people understand this intuitively. Which would you prefer: a 45 minute treadmill run in a gray room with artificial light, or a game of Ultimate Frisbee in a park on a sunny day? Or how about the choice between yoga in a studio and yoga on a cliff overlooking the ocean? Time spent in nature is undeniably good for our psychological and physiological well-being. I still hit up the gym for certain routines and for the camaraderie, but more and more I put an emphasis on getting back to nature – to get my daily dose of rays and to recharge in a more natural environment.
9. Much of the physical activity was done in context of a social setting (small bands of individuals who were hunting or foraging were working together on various chores). There is substantial evidence that some of the psychological benefits of formal exercise training programs are derived from the social bonding and other unique aspects of the group exercise sessions. The benefits of group exercise can be conferred by structured programs and/or informal exercise sessions involving at least 2 individuals.
Look at the popularity, success, and effectiveness of something like CrossFit. People are willing and able to subject their bodies to immense amounts of pain and suffering in the presence of others undergoing a similar experience. We are social animals who derive great satisfaction from being with likeminded individuals. Empathy is a powerful thing, and it’s there for a reason. We’re able to transfer the suffering, to spread it out across the group and make the pain a bit more bearable. You don’t have to take a spin class or go for a Zumba session or even do CrossFit, necessarily, to get the benefits of mixing social bonding with fitness. Simply adding a single workout partner will make things easier and help you stick to the regimen. Or, you could play sports, either in pickup game form or by joining a formal league.
10. Genetic evidence suggests that humans and dogs have been coevolving together for as long as 135 000 years. The mutual advantages conferred by this co-evolutionary process have been theorized to be related to cooperative hunting between domesticated wolves and our ancient hominin ancestors. Thus, both the dog and the human genomes may be specifically adapted to outdoor exercise involving cooperation between these 2 species. Indeed, studies indicate that dog ownership can facilitate adherence to an exercise program, improve fitness, and reduce excess weight among individuals.
I get my best workouts (most enjoyable, certainly) with my yellow lab, Buddha. He exudes confidence and serenity almost to the point of enlightenment, and I’m convinced that my appreciation of my dog isn’t just learned. These furry guys have been living, sleeping, working, hunting, and bonding with us humans for tens of thousands of years. It’s entirely feasible that genetic advantages to having a dog (for both parties involved) have arisen and persist today. I’ve actually written about what we can learn from and how to exercise with dogs. Read it and then get outdoors for some fractal fun.
11. Dancing was often performed as a part of rituals and celebrations, and is an ideal form of exercise that improves fitness and reduces stress.
As long as we’ve been drumming our hands, fingers, and sticks against objects to form rudimentary rhythmic patterns (tens of thousands, perhaps millions of years), we’ve been moving our bodies along with them. In other words, dance is unabashedly, absolutely Primal. I put dance in the play category, in that it’s that type of exercise that you do for the heck of it, because it’s fun (or you’re trying to procure a mate) and don’t realize you’re actually getting an amazing mental and physical workout. So dance, and don’t worry about looking ridiculous. You’re just acknowledging the presence of aural rhythms in the air with your body. It’s unnatural not to do so.
12. Sexual activity has always been an important aspect of human physical and social interaction. A frequency of sexual activity of 1 or 2 times per week correlates with multiple health benefits.
Some would say that this is the most Primal activity of them all. I won’t go too deeply into this one, not for prudishness, but because I’m planning a dedicated post on the topic in the near future. Stay tuned for that one. It will, sadly and by necessity, be relatively SFW.
13. Ample time for rest, relaxation, and sleep was generally available to ensure complete recovery after strenuous exertion.
Fitting that this is the last one, because it’s what everyone always forgets about (if they ever knew it at all) or ignores. Exercise is utterly pointless and even counterproductive without proper rest, relaxation, and sleep. You need to eat well and eat enough, let your muscles rest and regrow, and have enough downtime to reap the benefits of exercise. I mean, you’re doing this to increase the quality of life, right? You want to be strong and able to run fast and far so that life is easier and you don’t have to worry about your body, right? Get your rest and sleep, then. It’s the only way forward.

Many of us avoid sleeping during the day because we feel worse when we wake up, but new research shows a cat nap is actually good for you.
Sleep expert Michael Wernicke (from Wenatex) told TODAY many of us do not sleep enough overnight so napping enables us to catch up.
“Sleep is accumulative. We are suppose get 7-8 hours each night. But if we are only getting 6 hours, then over 7 nights we develop a ’sleep debt’ of 7 hours,” he says.
A lack of sleep can have damaging effects.
“If you only sleep 6 hours the night before, you are 3 times more likely to have a car accident.”
Wernicke also says the time you should take your nap will vary on your body clock.
“You will naturally get tired after you have been awake for the amount of hours you slept the night before.”
For example, if you slept 8 hours and woke up at 6am, you will need to have a nap 8 hours later, at 2pm.
Your body will naturally get tired just after lunch, and combined with a full stomach, you will begin to feel drowsy says the Brisbane based sleep expert.
“This cycle first originated in agriculturally rich countries where farmers tried to escape the hot midday sun after lunch by having a lie down.”
So how long should you nap for?
“A nap should be around 15 – 30 minutes while you are in your light sleep phase. Anything more and you will enter your deep delta wave sleep,” Wernicke says.
“If you wake after you have entered this stage your brain waves will go from deep waves to short sharp waves in a small amount of time. “
“The result is you will feel worse after waking up.”
Your ideal sleep conditions should be somewhere dark and quiet, with no noise and where you won’t be disturbed.
The findings, by Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, also give more meaning to the term “beauty sleep.”
“A cat nap will reduce stress, increase alertness, improve blood pressure and cardiovascular health,” says Wernicke.
Previous research has uncovered a link between lack of sleep and obesity, depression, cardiovascular problems and hypertension.

This essay is about the work of Dr. Rashid Buttar, author of The 9 Steps to Keep the Doctor Away, who along with Dr. Boyd Haley, then chairman of the chemistry department of Kentucky University, had considerable influence over my early thoughts in terms of the chemistry of
mercury and the misery it measured in human terms. I actually worked in cooperation with Dr. Buttar in research and writings about The Rising Tide of Mercury that is occurring on our planet.

People should not be happy to know that even in these six short years since I began my study of the exceptionally strong neurotoxin, mercury pollution has gotten disturbingly worse in the world, and we have reports from the United States to confirm that. Our failure as intelligent human beings is costing us stupendously in terms of enormous increases in chronic disease in children and adults alike.

Power plants in America emitted 134,365 pounds of mercury pollution in 2009, according to the new Environment America report, ‘Dirty Energy’s Assault on Our Health: Mercury.’ The report found that power plants in just four states – Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia – are responsible for over 35 percent of all mercury pollution from power plants in the United States.
In the late 1990s the estimates for coal-fired plants stood closer to 50 tons or 100,000 pounds, so Americans have been living through a 30 percent increase in the past decade or so. Globally the count is worse because China alone has been putting on the electrical grid one new coal-fired plant after another. India also has been expanding its industrial base rapidly using much more coal.
At the same time we have some nightmarish reports about recent dramatic rises in the incidence of diabetes but of course no one is connecting the dots between increasing mercury exposure and the diabetes pandemic. The number of diabetics in the United States has grown to nearly 26 million, a 10 percent increase over 2008, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in January 2010.
About five years ago I published an essay entitled ‘The Hun Hordes of Mercury and Diabetes’ but not many paid attention. In the case of diabetes, mercury is especially telling for it affects the beta cells, the insulin itself, and the insulin receptor sites setting off a myriad of complex disturbances in glucose metabolism.
Scaring everyone is a recent study that estimated one in three Americans will have diabetes if current trends continue. And of course one’s chance of getting cancer, stroke or a heart attack increases when one is diabetic. The damage mercury is doing is well hidden and not openly discussed by doctors and dentists because they still use mercury themselves, pretending and living with the fantasy that they are doing no harm with it.
Mercury plays no part in sustaining human life. It is a dangerous and volatile heavy metal that can devastate every aspect of human physiology and even collapse the sulfur bonds in insulin. Signs of mercury poisoning include excessive peeling skin, discoloration, rapid heartbeat, muscle weakness and others. It has even been linked to the onset of autism in some cases. Mercury poisoning is highly treatable if caught in the early stages and I strongly recommend using the most natural and pure medicinals, starting with the purest water possible.
In 2009, 12 coyotes died on the beach across the length of the Padre Island National Seashore, and more likely died hidden among the dunes. Scientists at first attributed the die-off to a red algae bloom that caused toxins to build up in fish the coyotes ate. But necropsies revealed a surprise: the animals had mercury levels of 16 parts per million in their livers. Mercury toxicity eventually kills and this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the impact on the animal kingdom and the impact on our children and our own lives.
‘I can now very comfortably and definitively state to you,’ says Dr. Rashid Buttar, ‘that, in my opinion, based on the evidence, every single chronic insidious disease process is related to one word: toxicity. You cannot address the issues of aging unless you address detoxification.‘ Dr. Buttar, board certified and a diplomate in preventive medicine and clinical metal toxicology, and vice-chairman of the American Board of Clinical Metal Toxicology, contends that he only recently (around 2004) arrived at this conclusion. ‘Five years ago I wouldn’t have said this, even a year ago I wouldn’t have said it. But the more success we’ve had, the clearer it has become: All chronic disease is toxicity. You get rid of the toxicity and you put out the fire. You may need to rebuild afterward, but you must put the fire out. Conventional medicine is just covering your eyes so you don’t see the fire.’

Dr. Boyd Haley believes that the CDC and the FDA are strongly influenced by the pharmaceutical and vaccine industries and that they have been derelict in their duty to safeguard the health of the American people. As a result of their delinquency, we have been systematically poisoned by mercury derived from silver amalgam fillings in our teeth, and our children, especially boys, have been severely damaged by vaccines containing thimerosal.
Dr. Rashid Buttar is well known for his work with the synthetic chelator TD-DMPS for children with autism as well as his cancer work with adults. His thoughts on the basic principles of managing and ridding our bodies of mercury burdens reach to people of all ages with numerous illnesses. With mercury being proven to be increasingly involved in disease processes, the need for chelation and detoxification becomes more and more clear every day. Below are his beliefs.
‘Children diagnosed with autism or autism spectrum disorders suffer from acute mercury toxicity secondary to huge exposure while in utero (maternal amalgam load, dietary factors, maternal inoculations, Rhogam injections, etc.) and early on in life (vaccinations preserved with thimerosal, etc.). Adults diagnosed with Alzheimer’s suffer from chronic, insidious mercury toxicity secondary to exposure over a long time (amalgam load, inhalation of mercury vapors, combustion of fossil fuels, dietary factors, etc.).By addressing and eliminating the mercury ’spark,’ the secondary ‘fires’ become far easier to manage clinically and the improvements realized from treatment of the resulting imbalances become easier to maintain.
‘The reason for some individuals to have severe damage from mercury where others do not have serious adverse neurological deficits is due to various factors that include biological individuality and genetic predisposition. In addition, factors such as the type of toxicity exposure the individual was exposed to makes an enormous difference. Was it inhaled, ingested, injected or exposed on their skin? What type of mercury exposure did the individual receive? Was it organic or inorganic mercury? If it was organic, was it ethyl mercury or methyl mercury? How frequent was the exposure to the source of toxicity? Was there a significant maternal load present prior to birth?
‘Was the situation exacerbated by the mother being inoculated, or having Rhogam administration either during gestation or prior to conception? How many vaccine administrations took place and over what period of time? What about the diet? How about the proximity to industrial sites, and exposure to combustion of fossil fuel? As you can see, the variables are extensive. But the treatment is essentially the same. The only difference is the extent of continuity of treatment.
‘The underlying common denominator in chronic neurodegenerative disease seems to be either decreasing vascular supply (less blood to the brain) or accumulation of heavy metals, specifically mercury.The inability of an individual to eliminate toxic metals, especially mercury, is directly related to the level of neurodegeneration experienced. In the young patient population suffering from autism or pervasive developmental delay, the vascular supply is not an issue. The underlying pathology of children with autism and the geriatric population with Alzheimer’s is of the same etiology, specifically mercury toxicity. Both these patient populations suffer from the inability to excrete mercury as a result of a genetic predisposition resulting from the Apo E allele. This allele appears to be associated with the inability to get rid of mercury from the system. If these patient populations inhabited a complete mercury-free environment, they would not have the problems associated with autism or Alzheimer’s.
When the mercury is successfully removed from their systems, these individuals begin to significantly improve due to a cessation of the destruction and denudation of the neurofibrils, as evidenced by steady improvement in cognitive function. Mercury is the ’spark’ that causes the ‘fires’ of autism as well as many other neurodegenerative diseases including PDD, ADD, ADHD and Alzheimer’s. Autism is the result of high mercury exposure early in life versus Alzheimer’s where there is a chronic accumulation of mercury over a lifetime. A doctor can treat ALL the ‘fires,’ but until the ’spark’ is removed, there is minimal hope of complete recovery with most realized improvements being transient at best.
‘Mercury is the underlying common denominator of all the problems from which these children suffer due to impairment of their excretory pathways. And the only solution for these non-eliminators is to effectively remove the mercury while repairing and enhancing the damaged elimination and detoxification pathways. Vaccine advocates refuse to debate actual facts about vaccines. That’s because the facts, if revealed, would reveal the vaccine industry to be based almost entirely on fraudulent science and profit motives. Those facts include:
• Vaccines are almost never scientifically tested in randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies using proper placebos such as saline solution. Instead, the industry uses other vaccines as “placebo” in order to try to hide the harm caused by those vaccines.

Dr Wakefield was the kindest most compassionate doctor who had ever taken an interest in our child’s case. He did not perform any procedures on our child, these were done with our consent and agreement by other doctors. None of the tests which were performed on our child were against our wishes. There was no display of callous behavior. I have never had any communication with Brian Deer nor do I ever intend to.”

It is no secret that our society struggles with weight loss resistance. Researchers at John Hopkins University estimate that by the year 2015 over 75% of Americans will be overweight with a staggering 41% being obese. Many people claim the country’s propensity to overeat and indulge on junk food on a lack of will power; however, science is now showing it may be related to our hormones. New research is showing that healthy sleep cycles have been shown to balance the hormones responsible for food cravings and overeating.
Ghrelin is a hormone that is produced by the stomach during times of famine. This hormone, isolated and named in 1999, stimulates hunger and digestive function. When we fast for several hours, our body begins to increase ghrelin production which interacts with the neurons in the metabolic control center of our hypothalamus, and we begin to feel hungry.
Leptin is a hormone secreted by our fat cells that interacts with the hypothalamus and creates feelings of satiety that shut down our hunger center. When we fast, ghrelin levels rise. When we eat, insulin and leptin levels rise and ghrelin levels drop. Higher levels of ghrelin have been associated with cravings for sugar-rich, calorie-dense junk food.
Many people go on calorie restricted diets in order to lose weight. However, calorie restriction leads to dramatic increases in ghrelin secretion. This results in uncontrollable hunger and eventual over-eating. This is the hormone responsible for the classic starvation-binge cycle that ruins so many weight loss pursuits. This is also why deprivation based weight loss programs have a very poor long-term success rate.
Sleep may be the Most Important Lifestyle Factor for Weight Loss. Researchers at Stanford University found that people who sleep 5 hours or less per night had a 15% greater amount of ghrelin and 15% less leptin than those who slept 8 hours a night. Another study showed that sleep deprived individuals had a significantly greater craving for carbohydrate rich junk food.
Leptin and ghrelin work as a check and balance system to control feelings of fullness & hunger. Poor sleep cycles drive leptin down and increase ghrelin. This drives the individual to have less satisfaction after eating and instead to crave more food leading to weight gain. Overtime the individual will become leptin resistant, which virtually shuts down the body’s ability to effectively burn fat. The sleep hormone melatonin has been shown to help heal leptin receptors and restore normal leptin sensitivity, which is critical for healthy weight loss and fat burning mechanisms in the body. Sleep deprived individuals do not secrete enough melatonin to restore normal leptin function.
Sleeping has also been shown to enhance human growth hormone (HGH) secretion, which is our body’s natural anti-aging hormone. HGH secretion switches our metabolism to burn fat, build muscle, & boost immunity. Elevated insulin levels are antagonistic to HGH. Therefore, eating food (particularly carbohydrate rich food) before we sleep at night is detrimental to our efforts to effectively burn fat.
Keys to a Good Night Sleep:
1) Do not eat within 3 hours of sleep
2) Eat low carbohydrate meals throughout the day and particularly at night.
3) Keep your bedroom cool (around 70F/21C)
4) Light inhibits melatonin secretion so keep your bedroom as dark as possible.
5) If you must eat before bed – have good fat/protein such as a shake with coconut milk, almond butter, cinnamon, & stevia.
6) Regular movement throughout the day helps burn off metabolic waste in muscles and cells allowing the body to relax more effectively.
7) Avoid caffeine and stimulants after 3pm
